Inspiration Oct 17, 2013

I have worked with more photographers in the past 16 years than I can even count; Some are friendly, some cold, some amazing, some lacking, but one of the most important qualities I count in a photographer, besides his skill, is his humility. Just a few months ago I had the great fortune of being introduced to Ja Tecson. Much to both of our surprises we discovered that we have numerous mutual friends spanning from Hawaii to LA to New York City and each and every person will tell you exactly what I am telling you now- Ja Tecson is someone you want to know.  Not only is he extremely talented but he is incredibly humble, friendly almost to a fault, and exudes so much warmth you’d think he’d never need a jacket. Cheesy? Yes. But it’s this warmth of his that transcends through his photography. He has the remarkable talent of making photos glow. I’ve only had the pleasure of working with him a few times, most recently on an awesome little collab between artist Esymai & PUMA. But here’s a little glimpse into the world of someone we could all aspire to be more like.

Name?

When did you first start taking pictures?

I first started taking pictures when I was 14. I was lucky enough to grow up with imagery since my father is a photographer. Documentation and the arts were always around the house as a child, and now that I reflect on it, it was truly a blessing. My father loved to talk about photography. As a kid, I think a lot of the information went in one ear and out the other. The only thing on my mind those days was basketball.  Honestly though, I appreciate him not ever forcing his craft on me either. He gave me the freedom to find my own style, and would give me tips and tricks whenever I asked. He even bought me my first camera. I can’t thank him enough for all his love and support.

Who or what inspired you to become a photographer?

I think many many people realize they can take photography more seriously the moment they take an amazing photo. There is a sense of self expression & ownership. I received that creative high the moment I could imagine something in my mind, and translate it onto a 4×6 print. That is when the journey began.

I also had a Tumblr/Pinterest type of education at home before the internet was born. My dad had all sorts of magazines floating around the house. Time, Rangefinder, Sports Illustrated, People, National Geographic, etc.  The list goes on and on, but I remember just looking at all these magazines as a kid. They served as my education and inspiration – more importantly, my foundation.

Do you remember your first camera?

Yes! It was the Canon Sureshot Supreme 35mm   God, I loved that camera!

Where do you draw most of your inspiration?

These days, inspiration is everywhere. I feel like it changes daily, which is a good thing. It’s important to keep an open mind and appreciate all that is out there in the world – music, graphic design, innovation, and people with passion inspire me. Everyone has a story to tell if you want to listen.

What do you like photographing most?

At the moment, my baby girl Sky is my favorite subject. She is 3 months old, and is starting to make the most amazing expressions ever!  It’s like falling in love with photography all over again.

 Most memorable shoot?

I can’t pinpoint a specific shoot, but during one of my trips to Hawai’i. I felt so motivated to create what I had been envisioning in my head for months. It was a time in my life when stylistically I was coming into my own. That trip confirmed that if I continued to push myself and hustle, I could grow into the photographer I wanted to be. Hawai’i is a magical place for me and I’ve had a deep connection to the islands for as long as I can remember.

What photo aspirations do you have in the future? (goals, dreams, etc., for your work)

I think every artist at some point in their career should know what it’s like to have full creative freedom. I’ve been blessed to align myself with brands and individuals that let me do what I do. In the end, it becomes a creative collaboration where everyone is happy. That, for me, is living the dream. Another goal at this stage of my career is to inspire and contribute to my craft in any sort of way. I’m excited to start being a voice in the creative community. I’ve felt what it’s like to inspire someone, and it’s an incredible feeling. Look out for upcoming art shows and speaking engagements in the future!

Life motto or favorite inspirational quote:

Live your Life.

I think this quote is limitless. It can be interpreted in so many different ways.  Life is always changing, and it’s important to follow your heart when the world challenges you. When we follow our true passions, we can experience a sense of freedom that is indescribable.
