VOLUNTEERS WANTED
Adventures Nov 8, 2013
For those of you who have been following me for a while, you may remember that I’ve been sponsoring a school outside of Bangkok for the past 3 years- ever since the big flood in 2011. The school is located in Inburi about 200km outside Bangkok near the Bang Chomsri Dam and houses, teaches, and feeds about 300 kids from grades 1-6. The kids are originally from a mountain village a few hours even further away. Every semester the kind monks at this temple rent buses and drive out to pick the children up so they can receive a proper education here at the temple school. At the end of the semester the children are driven back to their village to be reunited with their families.
In 2011, the Bang Chomsri Dam broke open contributing to the massive country-wide flood during an already heavy monsoon season. The temple and school got hit the hardest with water levels over 8 feet high. The school and its students lost everything- books, desks, chairs, toys, school supplies, and so much more.
*This shows the watermark on the temple structure to give you an idea of how high the water flooded.
Luckily the monks were able to evacuate the school in time so the children were able to be with their parents, but the damage was severe. Their bathrooms and kitchen were completely destroyed so our first mission in 2011 was to raise and donate enough money that we were able to build them brand new bathrooms. We also make a point of treating the kids to lunch whatever day we’re there as well as an extended playground break. As news about the school’s damage began to hit the media, people and companies came through to help rebuild and resupply the school with their basic needs- clothing, new paint for the classrooms and building, new sports equipment, and school supplies.
Once or twice a year when we are able to, we raise money and return to the school to help donate whatever they currently need- last year we focused on the extremely giving teachers who needed new teaching supplies like white boards, markers, speakers, books, etc., The classrooms are at maximum capacity and these amazing teachers are providing knowledge with the bare minimum available to them.
This year we decided to take a different approach and rather than ask the teachers what the kids need and want, we sent them forms for each student to fill out with their name, grade, and what they want. The response was overwhelming. Most of the kids wanted new clothes, watches, and toys- the boys mostly want remote control cars and the girls want Barbies. A few of the kids wanted new books to read or sports equipment. As soon as we received the lists we began searching for the gifts and the money to help buy these small but significant things.
This coming Saturday, November 9th, 2013 we will be returning to the school around 10am to set up and treat the kids to a simple lunch followed by their very own little carnival of games and prizes. Together with my dad, mom, & her incredible staff and a few friends, we’ve not only rounded up all the toys and gifts, but also planned and put together a handful of simple game booths for the kids to play. With 300 kids and about 8 booths we need more volunteers to help play with the kids and keep things in order. If you’re free Nov 9th we would be so delighted to have you there to help us (:
These kids come from nothing and have little else beyond what the school is able to give. They’re wonderful little warriors each full of gratitude and smiles- I’ve never seen a more proper group of kids before. At lunch time the older kids line up to help the younger kids and everyone sits in neat little rows. As soon as they’re done eating they put their dishes away and sweep the floors clean.
I really hope a few of you can make it out to meet these kids or if you’re interested in at least donating money, every little bit helps <3
You can donate money into the following account:
Siam Commercial Bank (Central Chitlom Branch)
Tayarawee Rogers
Savings Account #402-961916-5
We understand that the school is a bit far so we encourage you all to find a group to carpool with if possible – plus that helps the drive go by quicker (: And if you can’t volunteer or donate, please at least help us by spreading the word via twitter, Facebook, instagram or by word of mouth!
