8 OWLS
Edibles Sep 10, 2014
Japanese food is one of my favorites- I’m pretty sure I eat Japanese food at least once a week if not 3. And I am always down to try a new Jap spot so when 8 Owls popped up on my radar, I jumped at the chance to meet up with the girls for a little night out. 8 Owls is located on the very top floor of the Nihonmura Mall in Thonglor soi 13- and I mean the very top floor, the floor you didn’t even know they had; you can access this mystical floor via the elevator from the parking garage beneath the building but not the glass elevator that faces the street. 8 Owls is the only restaurant on this floor so you can’t miss it.With a long bar serving up refreshing cocktails leading to an awesome cage looking dining room, 8 Owls had me at aesthetics & vibe. They play nonstop old school hip-hop, lovers rock, & downtempo lounge music so whether you’re in it for the drinks or the dishes, 8 Owls is a great place to meet up with friends.
Oh and did I mention the crisp Hitachino on tap? I don’t drink a lot of beer but I do like my Hitachinos.
We started with their Miso cocktail which actually came out in a little miso soup bowl: beefeater gin, lychee, peach, elderflower, fresh lime, pandanus- no actual miso haha.
It even had little tofu looking cube that were actually a kind of jelly- a sweet yummy drink for the girl who doesn’t love to drink alcohol, it tasted a lot like candy. Andrea decided to go for the Bento cocktail which showed up in this pretty little bento with crushed ice and decor covering a glass bottle containing havana club 7ans , black currant, honey ,passion fruit, fresh lime, angostura bitters- if I tell you we finished it in no time, will you judge us? Then we ordered half a dozen oysters on the half shell- half Kumamoto, half Shigoku. Along with the oysters we ordered some of the best edamame I’ve ever had because of the amazing sauce they toss it in- I have no idea what’s in it besides the sesame oil but it’s oh so delectable. We also got two (maybe three) orders of the olive tempura- little black olives stuffed with cheese then fried up tempura style, yum. Also delicious but not pictured are the oyster shooters (oyster with layers of quail egg, spicy daikon and ponzu) in individual shot glasses- oh so yum.
To start the real feast we ordered the thin crust okonomiyaki (aka Japanese style pizza) & the tempura roll. Shiitake bacon spaghetti I’m pretty sure we tried almost every cocktail on the menu! They were all SO GOOD! The pork ribs were also tasty in a nice tangy Japanese style bbq sauce.
You better believe I’ll be returning with a hungry tummy ready to try everything all over again soon!
