The Vacationers
Inspiration Oct 4, 2014
Contrary to the title of this book I did not read it while on vacation. I read it while I was busy working on my current TV project between scenes between the city and the jungles of Thailand. This book, however, did provide some much needed moments of escape as I lost myself in the Post family vacation to Mallorca (which has now been added to my list of places to visit in the world, thank you very much Emma Straub- I hope they give you a cut of their tourism income!)
Oh how easy it is to get caught up in the life of others! I won’t say the novel is full of exciting or wildly crazy adventures, it’s not. But it does create an honest picture of an imperfect family on an imperfect, much needed, vacation. Even while reading the novel I could imagine the movie scenes playing out which is both a credit to Straub’s terrific writing & my minds entirely too smitten obsession with movies.
All in all, The Vacationers is a perfectly good novel to read whether or not you’re on vacation. And there’s truly a character for everyone in this novel- mother, daughter, son, father, girlfriend, boyfriend, husband, wife, fling, they’re all there. And when you’re done reading it, get ready to pack your bags for Mallorca. I’ll meet you there xx
