George.

Style Nov 27, 2014

For years I learned cursive in school. Did you know schools don’t even teach cursive anymore? What sort of technological copout is that? How in the world will the newer generations develop a signature for all those dot com checks they’ll be writing and receiving? But i digress.

I love cursive & calligraphy. I scoop up old postcards and photo albums at flea markets simply because i love the way any sentiment looks in cursive and the older generations did it best. Until now.

Enter George. I was introduced to George through a friend through social media (surprise, surprise.) Typically I don’t “follow” people I don’t know (brands & companies are another beast altogether), but i was immediately smitten by who and what George portrays. Not only did I immediately “follow” him, but I became that creep who scrolls back a few weeks and begins “liking” every photo. Needless to say, I’m a huge fan.

You’re going to want to be a fan too.

When did you begin exploring your artistic passions?

I first started when I was 8 or 9 years old. My mom was an artist, so she would show me a lot of things.  I first started drawing Saturday morning cartoons (Looney Tunes, Disney, etc).

What does being an artist mean to you?
Being an artist means I can be myself. It’s having freedom over the choices you make and being the person you choose to be in life. Being able to be creative for work, is the best way to work. I am my boss and my own worst critic. It is the ultimate sense of freedom.

george carpe diemWhere do you draw most of your inspiration from?
My life experiences, music, friends, family, and love influence my work. The relationships I have with each of those things, is where the art comes from.

george commonWhat are a few of your artistic goals?
I want to begin tattooing, publish a book, own my own studio space, and collaborate with other artists. Ultimately, I want to create more.

The art of calligraphy and cursive isn’t simply for our grandparents anymore. Creative young people are giving class a run for its money- and they’re winning.
